Asim Alam: Hillsborough County and Partners Demonstrate Drone-Based Emergency Blood Delivery
Asim Alam, Medical Director of Utilization and Medical Services, Hospital Liaison Relations at Canadian Blood Services, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The future of blood delivery is taking flight.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, in partnership with Tampa General Hospital, OneBlood, and Archer First Response Systems, has demonstrated a groundbreaking approach to emergency transfusion medicine: delivering whole blood directly to emergency scenes by drone.
The program is designed to cover 70 square miles, with average delivery times of under three minutes.
Why is this significant?
For patients experiencing life-threatening hemorrhage, minutes matter.
The ability to deliver blood directly to first responders could fundamentally change how we approach prehospital transfusion, emergency response, and blood product distribution.
Beyond the technology itself, this initiative raises exciting possibilities for how we design more responsive, accessible, and efficient blood supply systems.
As the program moves toward live operations, it will be fascinating to see how these innovations translate into clinical outcomes and opportunities for broader implementation.
An exciting development at the intersection of transfusion medicine, logistics, and patient care.”
