Aya AlFakih: Why HbA1c Can Be High even When this Morning’s Glucose Looks Normal?

Aya AlFakih, Former Teacher at Studypoint Learning Cente, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Ever wondered why HbA1c can be high even when this morning’s glucose looks normal?

A glucose test is a snapshot of one moment. HbA1c is the longer-term picture: glucose attaches to hemoglobin and builds up over the ~120-day life of red blood cells, reflecting roughly the past 2-3 months.

One catch for the lab: conditions that change red cell lifespan, like hemolytic anemia or recent blood loss, and some hemoglobin variants can make HbA1c misleading.

Save this for your lab prep, and share it with a colleague who’s studying.”
