Bob Lempke: How One Blood Donation Can Save Up to Three Lives
Bob Lempke, Chief Commercial Officer at Mobile Locker, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“That time again.
I got to thinking about something most donors never consider — what actually happens after you leave that chair?
Here’s the journey your blood takes:
- Day 1 — It leaves with a barcode. Every donation is labeled with a unique barcode and tracked at every stage. Your pint goes on ice and heads to a processing center.
- Day 1-2 — It gets separated. A centrifuge spins your blood at high speed, separating it into three distinct components — red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Each goes to a different patient with a different need.
In parallel — It gets tested. A dozen tests confirm your blood type and screen for infectious diseases. Only after all tests clear does your donation move forward.
- Day 3 — It reaches a hospital. Most components are ready for distribution within 72 hours of donation. Red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days. Platelets — just 5.
Then — It (you) changes and even saves a life.
Cancer patients. Trauma victims. Mothers in childbirth. Newborns. Sickle cell patients. Surgery recipients. The list of people waiting is long and real.
One hour of your time. One single pint of blood.
Up to three people. Three different lives. Three different stories that continue just because you showed up.
That’s not a small thing. That’s everything.
If you’ve been thinking about donating — maybe today is the day you go here and find a drive near you…”
