Bruno Pougault: The Hidden Burden of Hemostatic Disorders in Women
Bruno Pougault, Global Marketing Hemostasis Product Manager at HORIBA, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Women and girls face unique risks for bleeding disorders and blood clots at every stage of life.
From the first menstrual period to pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause, women experience profound hormonal and physiological changes that continuously reshape the balance between bleeding and clotting.
Heavy menstrual bleeding is often dismissed as ‘normal,’ yet it may be the first sign of an underlying bleeding disorder such as von Willebrand disease. At the same time, hormonal contraception, pregnancy, and the postpartum period can significantly increase the risk of thrombosis.
What is most concerning is that many women remain underdiagnosed, undertreated, or experience years of diagnostic delay, leading to avoidable complications, chronic iron deficiency, anemia, reduced quality of life, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
Women’s hemostatic health should not be considered only during pregnancy. It requires a lifelong approach, greater awareness, earlier diagnosis, and stronger collaboration between hematologists, gynecologists, and primary care physicians.
The question is no longer whether women’s blood health deserves more attention.
The question is: why did it take so long?”
