Cedrice Mentor: Reducing Platelet Wastage Through Cold Storage

Cedrice Mentor, Laboratory Manager at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Proud to have been part of the implementation of Cold Stored Platelets at NYC Health plus Hospitals/Woodhull!

Seeing our work showcased today at AABB Annual Meeting is a rewarding moment, highlighting our journey from identifying an operational challenge to implementing a quality-driven solution with measurable results.

Recognizing the significant platelet wastage within our transfusion service, Dr. Jacobson identified an opportunity to strengthen blood product utilization and made the strategic decision to implement Cold Stored Platelets.

The goal was clear: reduce platelet outdating, optimize inventory management, and maintain the availability of this critical blood component for patients in need.

Through leadership, collaboration, and the dedication of our Blood Bank team, we translated this vision into practice.

Our measurable impact:

  • 37.8 percent reduction in platelet expiration, from 44.5 percent to 27.6 percent.
  • 10,415 dollars in savings through fewer expired platelet units.
  • Improved inventory management and responsible stewardship of valuable blood products.

This achievement represents more than reducing wastage.

It demonstrates how quality-driven leadership, collaborative implementation, and data informed decisions can strengthen operational performance while supporting safety.

Grateful to Dr. Jacobson’s leadership and the commitment of our Blood Bank team in bringing this initiative to life.

Meaningful improvement begins with recognizing an opportunity, but lasting impact comes from working together to turn that opportunity into action.”
