Daniel Pereira Monteiro: ASCAT 2026 A Day of Science, Connection and Community
Daniel Pereira Monteiro, NHSE Screening Professional Clinical Advisor, posted on LinkedIn:
“I only made it to one day.
The Academy For Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia ASCAT 2026 runs for four days. I was there for Friday.
And it was amazing!
There is something that happens when you walk into a room full of people who have dedicated their careers to the same patients you think about every day.
The posters. The talks. The latest research pushing the field forward in ways that sent me straight back to the literature over the weekend. That energy, the vibe is hard to manufacture anywhere else.
But the science was not the part that stayed with me most.
It was the people.
Seeing Aliyu Dahiru Waziri again (one of the secondees from the ARISE project) reminded me how much of this field is built on relationships forged between people who care deeply about the same thing.
Those reconnections do not happen on a screen. They happen in a room like that one.
And then, moments I needed to relfect or digest over the weekend, people approached me. Scientists and clinicians who recognised the work I have been putting into LinkedIn and YouTube.
They said it had been very useful. Who asked for more
I started creating content because I believed there was a gap.
A place where laboratory science and clinical practice could meet, where a biomedical scientist, a haematology nurse, a registrar preparing for FRCPath could all find something they could actually use.
Hearing that it is landing, in a room full of the people who matter most in this field, was more encouraging than I know how to put into words
I will be back next year. And next time, who knows…to talk about Haemopaedia properly, what it is, where it is going, and how it can serve this community even better.
To everyone I spoke to on Friday, it was great; thank you. You reminded me what this is all for.”
