Felicity Appiah: Understanding the Bethesda System for Cervical Cytology
Felicity Appiah, Health Director at NATCARE AFRICA, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Understanding The Bethesda System
How are cervical cytology results reported consistently?
The Bethesda System provides standardised terminology for reporting cervical cytology findings.
Key components include:
- Specimen adequacy
- General categorisation
- Specific cellular abnormalities
- Other relevant findings
- Comments and recommendations, where appropriate.
Why does this matter?
Standardised reporting improves communication and supports appropriate clinical management.
Remember: Adequacy tells us whether a specimen can be evaluated; the diagnostic category tells us what the examination reveals.
Can you explain the difference between an unsatisfactory specimen and a NILM result?
Follow the series as we explore the Bethesda System step by step.”
