Gladys Delancey: Spotting the Warning Signs of Vein Disease

Gladys Delancey, Integrated Science Committee Chair at Georgia State University Perimeter College, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“When Veins Speak: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore.

Veins carry blood back to the heart.

When veins become damaged, blocked, or their valves stop working properly, blood can pool or circulation can be disrupted.

Common vein problems

  • Varicose veins — enlarged, twisted veins, usually in the legs
  • Spider veins — small red, blue, or purple surface veins
  • Chronic venous insufficiency — weakened valves allow blood to pool in the legs
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — a blood clot in a deep vein, often in the leg
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis — inflammation and clotting in a vein close to the skin
  • Venous ulcers — slow-healing wounds caused by poor venous circulation

Possible symptoms

  • Leg swelling
  • Aching, heaviness, or cramping
  • Warmth or tenderness
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Visible or bulging veins
  • Itching or burning around affected veins

Risk factors

  • Aging
  • Sitting or standing for long periods
  • Pregnancy
  • Excess body weight
  • Family history
  • Smoking
  • Recent surgery or prolonged immobility

Seek urgent medical care for sudden one-sided leg swelling or pain, especially if accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or fainting, because a DVT can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism.
