Haroon Gul Khan: Why Critical Reading Matters in Medical Education
Haroon Gul Khan, Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Critical Care Medicine at Aga Khan University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A small observation, but a meaningful academic moment.
While studying Rogers’ Textbook of Pediatric Intensive Care, 6th Edition, I identified a possible cross-reference inconsistency in the chapter on coagulation issues in the PICU, related to where deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism were said to be discussed in detail.
Rather than ignoring it, I reviewed the relevant chapters and index, then contacted Dr. Robert I. Parker, co-author of the chapter.
I was very pleased to receive his response acknowledging the observation and informing me that he would forward it to the publishers for their attention.
For me, this was a valuable reminder that learning medicine is not only about reading what is written.
It is also about reading critically, questioning carefully, verifying sources, and contributing when something does not seem consistent.
Grateful to Dr. Parker for his gracious response.
Every careful observation has the potential to improve the learning experience for those who come after us.”
