Addressing the Hidden Burden of Bleeding Disorders in Women – Hemophilia Society Mumbai Chapter
Hemophilia Society Mumbai Chapter shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Empowering Women Who Bleed: Awareness, Diagnosis and Better Care.
Women and girls with bleeding disorders remain under-recognized, under-diagnosed and under-treated.
Heavy menstrual bleeding is often normalized, when it should be investigated.
To address this gap, the Women’s Group of Hemophilia Society Mumbai Chapter (HSMC), in collaboration with KEM Hospital and ICMR-NIIH-NIRBID, organized a dedicated camp on ‘Empowering Daily Life, Work and Wellness’ for girls and women with bleeding disorders and hemophilia carriers on 14th October 2026 at ICMR-NIRBID, Mumbai.
The camp saw 45 plus women participants, including 8 women with von Willebrand Disease (VWD) and haemophilia A carriers – a powerful reminder that bleeding disorders are not just a male condition.
Key Sessions:
Dr. Rucha Patil, Scientist, ICMR-NIIH, KEM Hospital on Women Who Bleed: Understanding Haemophilia Carriers and VWD – Emphasized the importance of recognizing abnormal bleeding, tracking menstrual history, and timely assessment of factor levels.
Dr. Sharda Shanbhag, Scientist, ICMR-NIIH on Carrier and Prenatal Testing – Explained inheritance patterns, testing protocols, sample requirements, timelines and access.
Dr. Jyoti Chirmade, (Clinical Hematology and Hemato-oncology), KEM Hospital on Management of Bleeding in Women – Covered home-based management and clinical pathways, followed by an insightful Q and A.
Dr. Kirti Kene Patil and Team, Occupational Therapy – Focused on holistic wellness:
- Joint protection and body mechanics
- Fatigue management through the 3 Ps: Prioritising, Planning, Pacing
- Work simplification and energy conservation
- Mental health and functional independence in self-care, work and leisure
Occupational therapy reaffirms that care goes beyond factor replacement – it is about enabling women to live, work and thrive.
