Hisam Siddiqi: Understanding Four Important Inherited Platelet Function Disorders

Hisam Siddiqi, Consultant Haematologist at LycaHealth, The Blackheath Hospital, Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Understanding Inherited Platelet Function Disorders — A Quick Clinical Snapshot

Always good to pause and revisit the fundamentals. This simple comparison highlights four important inherited platelet disorders we encounter in clinical practice: Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia, Bernard–Soulier Syndrome, Gray Platelet Syndrome, and Hermansky–Pudlak Syndrome.

From key diagnostic clues — such as thrombocytopenia, platelet morphology, and aggregation patterns — to underlying genetic causes, each condition carries its own distinctive profile. Recognising these differences is essential for accurate diagnosis, guiding further testing, and planning holistic patient care.

These conditions may be rare, but early recognition can make a meaningful difference for patients navigating bleeding symptoms, multisystem involvement, or complex diagnostic journeys.

Always learning. Always refining.”
