“Madrid makes an urgent appeal for blood donation with reserves at 38%.
38%. That is the figure to which blood reserves have fallen in the Community of Madrid, with 1,913 bags available compared to an optimal level set at 5,000.
It is not just a snapshot of the summer: the lower influx of donors in August now intersects with heat waves and hospital demand that does not understand the calendar.
The alert affects groups 0+, 0-, A+, A-, B- and AB-, which are in red.
And the problem is not limited to replenishing stock: Madrid needs 900 donations a day to maintain the activity of 70 hospitals, from emergencies and operating theatres to transplants, accidents, haemorrhages or burns.
Blood is not manufactured or has a substitute, they remember from the region.
The appeal comes with a wide network of fixed points in 30 hospitals, in addition to the Transfusion Centre, mobile units and the Red Cross room in the capital.
