”Anemia is quietly undermining hip replacement outcomes — and most care teams don’t catch it until it’s too late.
A 2026 review in Orthopaedic Surgery (Hu, Zhao and Chen) found that 20–50% of patients undergoing elective total hip replacement present with anemia before surgery.
The consequences are well documented: higher rates of postoperative infection and delayed wound healing, longer hospital stays, slower functional recovery, greater need for transfusion (with its own risks), and higher long-term rates of revision surgery and patient dissatisfaction.
What makes this review stand out is its novel perspective: rather than stopping at outcomes statistics, it traces the underlying cellular mechanisms — iron metabolism, erythropoiesis suppression, hepcidin regulation — and links them directly to clinical management strategies.
