Mital Jhaveri: Anticoagulant Approval and Uptake Timeline
Mital Jhaveri, Heart Failure Pharmacist at NYC HHC Queens Hospital Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“When presenting on anticoagulation recently, I was asked a thought-provoking question: why is anticoagulant use increasing?
The answer goes beyond simply ‘more prescriptions.’
It boils down to two main factors: ease of use and a growing need.
Here are a few key reasons:
- Safer, easier medications: Newer anticoagulants are more predictable, require less monitoring, and have fewer interactions.
- Wider clinical use: Anticoagulants are now utilized in various settings, including atrial fibrillation, venous thromboembolism, post-surgical care, and prevention.
- Aging population: An increasing number of patients are developing conditions like atrial fibrillation that necessitate anticoagulation.
- Earlier detection: Improved screening tools and wearable technology are helping to identify at-risk patients sooner.
- Stronger guidelines: Current clinical recommendations advocate for broader and earlier use in suitable patients.
- Greater physician confidence: Long-term data and real-world experience have made prescribing these medications more routine.
In summary, anticoagulants have transitioned from complex, high-maintenance therapies to standard, widely used treatments in modern healthcare.”
