Nawsherwan Mohammad: Study Examines Thrombotic Events in Patients with Polycythemia Vera in Iraq

Nawsherwan Mohammad, Consultant Hematopathologist at Nanakaly Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Thrombotic Complications

A hospital-based retrospective study conducted in hematology outpatient clinics across multiple centers in Iraq from January to November 2020 enrolled 30 patients with PV, all of whom were positive for the JAK2 V617F mutation Husam and Almothafar, Ann Coll Med Mosul 2022.

The mean ± SD age at diagnosis was 60.6 ± 11 years (range 35–78 years), the mean duration of disease was 54 ± 5.5 months, and the median duration was 24 months Husam and Almothafar, 2022.

Thrombosis at the time of diagnosis was reported in four of 30 patients Husam and Almothafar, 2022.

During follow-up, thrombotic events after starting treatment developed in six patients (20%), occurring at different time points even after achievement of hematological control (hematocrit less than or equal to 45%) Husam and Almothafar, 2022.

The authors reported that most of these events developed during the first four years after diagnosis Husam and Almothafar, 2022.

Within this 30-patient cohort, thrombosis was the most frequently recorded complication Husam and Almothafar, 2022.

The thrombotic events comprised arterial events (myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular accident) and venous events (deep vein thrombosis and portal vein thrombosis) Husam and Almothafar, 2022.”
