Omar Adwan։ ESR in Inflammation and Disease Assessment

Omar Adwan, Medical Laboratory Technologist at Modawah Lab Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR)

Simple blood test that measures the rate a which red blood cell settle to the bottom of test tube over one hour.

Presence of inflammation causes protein like fibrinogen to make red blood cells clump together which are heavier and settle faster.

ESR are specially useful for detecting inflammation and diagnose disease like:

  1. Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
  2. Infections.
  3. Certain cancers, such as lymphoma or leukemia.
  4. Specific inflammatory diseases like giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica.

Factor affecting ESR test

  1. serum protein concentration like (fibrinogen, globulin, albumin and ferritin).
  2. technical factors – storage condition, sample handling, duration of storage, tube orientation.
  3. life style factored – smoking, drinking alcohol and obesity.
  4. age and gender – ESR increases with age and ESR typically higher in females than males.

Normal ranges of ESR

  • Men under 50: Less than 15 mm/hr
  • Women under 50: Less than 20 mm/hr
  • Men over 50: Less than 20 mm/hr
  • Women over 50: Less than 30 mm/hr
  • Children: Less than 10 mm/hr

Note

A higher ESR suggests inflammation in the body but it is non specific test.”
