“One of medicine’s darkest lessons came from hemophilia.

In the 1980s, thousands of people with hemophilia were infected with HIV through contaminated blood products.

But here’s the crucial distinction:

Hemophilia didn’t cause HIV. Its treatment became the route of transmission.

Factor VIII and IX concentrates were manufactured from pooled human plasma.

Before effective HIV screening and viral-inactivation methods were available, HIV-contaminated plasma could enter manufacturing pools and ultimately expose large numbers of patients.

The consequences were devastating.

But medicine learned – and changed:

  • Donor screening became far more rigorous
  • Blood products began undergoing extensive infectious-disease testing
  • Viral-inactivation methods transformed plasma-derived products
  • Manufacturing standards became much stricter
  • Hemovigilance and patient-safety systems evolved

A painful reminder:

Medical progress is sometimes written in the lessons of our worst failures.

The goal of transfusion medicine is not merely to treat disease. It is to make sure the treatment itself does not become the next threat.”
