Samiul Bashir: The 47th Recognized System in Transfusion Medicine
Samiul Bashir, Member at Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), Founder of SB Global, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“MAL Blood Group System – A Rare Discovery in Transfusion MedicineIn 2024, scientists recognized the MAL blood group system as the 47th blood group system, marking an important milestone in transfusion medicine.
Key FactsAntigen:
- AnWjProtein: MAL protein on red blood cells (RBCs)
- Gene location: Chromosome 2 (2q11.1)
- Prevalence: AnWj antigen is present in over 99.9% of the general population.
- Rare phenotype: AnWj-negative individuals lack this antigen and are extremely rare.
The discovery helps improve the identification of rare blood phenotypes and supports safer blood transfusion practices by helping laboratories recognize potential antigen incompatibilities.
This is another reminder that blood grouping extends far beyond the familiar ABO and Rh systems.”
