Hemolysis is the rupture of red blood cells, causing hemoglobin to be released into the plasma.

During hemodialysis, it can become a serious patient-safety concern and requires early recognition and immediate action.

Common causes may include:

  • Excessive blood flow or negative pressure.
  • Kinked or obstructed blood lines.
  • Improper needle placement or small-gauge needles.
  • Dialysate contamination or abnormal dialysate conditions.
  • Excessive mechanical stress on the blood circuit.

Warning signs:

  • Pink or red discoloration of the dialysate.
  • Dark or abnormal-looking blood.
  • Back or chest pain.
  • Dyspnea.
  • Hypotension.
