Seema Dawood: The Vital Link Between Hematology and Blood Banking
Seema Dawood, Medical Laboratory Technologist at The Aga Khan University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Hematology and Blood Bank
Work hand-in-hand in diagnosing and treating patients with blood disorders.
Key Connections:
Hematology test results (e.g., CBC, PT/aPTT) help determine the need for blood transfusion
Blood disorders such as thalassemia may involve alloantibodies – requiring special antibody screening by the Blood Bank
Post-transfusion monitoring (e.g., CBC) evaluates the patient’s response
Coagulation results support decisions on preparing plasma or platelets
Examples of Collaboration:
Bleeding due to thrombocytopenia – Hematology detects the issue – Blood Bank prepares platelets
Major surgery – CBC and PT/aPTT are checked – Blood Bank pre cross matches and prepares blood in advance
So, when we master Hematology, we also excel in Blood Bank – together, we ensure patient safety and care!”
