SHOT Urges Safe Component Matching While NHSBT Appeals for Black Donors
Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“As Sickle Cell Awareness Month begins, SHOT acknowledges the crucial role of transfusion support for many patients living with sickle cell disease.
SHOT reports continue to highlight the importance of selecting appropriately matched blood components, maintaining accurate and accessible transfusion histories, and ensuring effective communication between clinical and laboratory teams, particularly where patients receive care across multiple organisations.
Learning from haemovigilance reports supports improvements in transfusion safety and patient outcomes.”
NHS Blood and Transplant shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Today (September 1st) marks the start of Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
Sickle cell is a genetic hereditary blood disorder that makes it harder for the red cells to move around the body and they can stick together, blocking blood vessels which can cause excruciating pain, anaemia and organ damage.
It most commonly affects people from Black African or Black Caribbean backgrounds. Many patients with sickle cell rely on regular blood transfusions every 4 to 6 weeks.
To get the best treatment, people with sickle cell who have regular transfusions need blood that’s similar to their own. This is why we are using this month to appeal for more blood donors from Black African or Black Carribbean backgrounds.
