Tareq Abadl: Erythropoiesis – The Cellular Engineering Behind Oxygen Delivery
Tareq Abadl, Medical Laboratory Specialist and Director of the Blood Bank at Dr. Abdelkader Al-Mutawakkil Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Erythropoiesis: The Cellular Engineering Behind Oxygen Delivery.
Erythropoiesis is the physiological process responsible for the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the bone marrow.
How It Begins
It starts with hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that differentiate into erythroid progenitor cells.
Stages of Maturation
Through successive stages, the developing cell undergoes structural and functional changes:
- Proerythroblast
- Erythroblast
- Reticulocyte
During these stages:
- Hemoglobin synthesis increases
- The nucleus condenses and is eventually expelled
- The cell becomes specialized for oxygen transport
The Role of Erythropoietin (EPO)
The hormone erythropoietin (EPO), primarily secreted by the kidneys in response to hypoxia, stimulates:
- Erythroid proliferation
- Differentiation
- Maturation
Low oxygen levels = Increased EPO production = Increased RBC formation
Final Step
- After entering circulation, reticulocytes mature into fully functional erythrocytes capable of efficient oxygen transport.
Why It Matters
Erythropoiesis ensures:
- Adequate oxygen delivery to tissues
- Hematologic balance
- Physiological homeostasis․”
