Theodosios Tsinas: Cerebral Venous Thrombosis – A Less Recognized Cause of Stroke

Theodosios Tsinas, Director of diagnostic and interventional Neuroradiology at Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus – MHOC, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“World Thrombosis Day | 13 October

Not every stroke is of arterial origin.

Cerebral venous thrombosis occurs when a clot blocks the veins or venous sinuses responsible for draining blood from the brain.

Although it accounts for approximately 0.5–3% of strokes, it can particularly affect younger adults and women during pregnancy or the postpartum period.

Warning signs may include:

  • New or progressively worsening headache
  • Seizures
  • Weakness or speech disturbance
  • Visual symptoms or confusion.

Early recognition and appropriate imaging with CT venography or MRI/MR venography can be decisive.

Learn more in my new patient-information article.”
