Eugene Fan Highlights Urgent Need to Decarbonise Thrombosis and Haemostasis Care
Eugene Fan, Senior Consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Thrilled to share our recently published Viewpoint in The Lancet Haematology: Sustainable Anticoagulation for Climate-Resilient Care
We highlight the urgent need to integrate environmental sustainability into anticoagulation practices.
Anticoagulation is one of the most widely prescribed and resource-intensive therapies worldwide. Yet, its environmental impact—from pharmaceutical manufacturing and packaging to laboratory monitoring and clinical service delivery—remains largely unaddressed.
In this piece, our multidisciplinary team calls for:
– Embedding carbon footprint assessments into anticoagulation pathways
– Promoting low-waste clinical models and digital health solutions
– Developing climate-resilient supply chains for essential medicines
– Encouraging collaborative frameworks between clinicians, health systems, and industry to decarbonise thrombosis and haemostasis care
This work represents a step towards aligning clinical outcomes and planetary health—a shared responsibility for all of us in haematology and beyond.
