Hemophilia: A Century of Breakthroughs, Tragedies, and Triumph — by Ahmed Kotb 2025
Ahmed Kotb posted on X
From scientific discovery to global transformation, the history of hemophilia care is marked by extraordinary progress—and painful lessons.
Key Milestones in Hemophilia Care:
”1947: Hemophilia A & B were scientifically distinguished.
1950s–1970s: Introduction of plasma transfusions, cryoprecipitate, and early factor concentrates.
1980s: The HIV/HCV tragedy emerged due to contaminated blood products—changing transfusion safety forever.
1992: Recombinant factor therapies transformed the standard of care, reducing reliance on plasma-derived products.”
Today: In high-income countries, life expectancy for people with hemophilia is approaching that of the general population.
”A century of resilience and research has brought us to the brink of gene therapy and individualized prophylaxis. But global access and equity remain urgent goals.”
