Anita Brikman: Advancing Plasma Availability and Access to Plasma-Derived Therapies in India

Anita Brikman, President and CEO of the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“On the second day of Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA)’s visit to India, we focused on the blood banking system and its supply of recovered plasma for the manufacture of plasma-derived therapies.

The Indian Red Cross Society -IRCS (National Headquarters, New Delhi India), led by Dr. Vanshree Singh, operates donation centers across the country, from metropolitan areas to rural villages. Increasing collection of high-quality plasma for fractionation would contribute to the availability of PDTs for patients in India.

The head of the blood center at the ILBS India (Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences), Dr. Meenu Bajpai, is also invested in the therapeutic value of plasma. Her center established the first and largest convalescent plasma program during COVID; today, the hospital treats liver disease and other health conditions with plasma exchange.

Our day concluded with a visit to the Delhi headquarters of PPTA member Grifols, which supplies treatment for hemophilia and other conditions in India. Thank you to Manpreet Singh for providing additional insights on the current landscape here.

While there is much work to be done on advancing the availability of plasma and access to PDTs in this region, it’s clear there is a groundswell of support for this shared mission, and the opportunity to impact thousands of lives.”
