James P. Crowley: Dr Richard Silver and the Evolution of Hematology-Oncology
James P. Crowley, Professor of Medicine emeritus at Brown University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Richard Silver was eventually the oldest practicing and world renowned Hematologist at 97!
Not interested in being drafted into the ranks of MDs being shipped off to the Korean War, he wanted to be a public health Cardiologist at NIH but while there were no openings then for cardiology at NIH they were looking for cancer researchers.
Although he describes cancer medicine which included then Hematology as being viewed as the ‘Gulag of all Specialties’ he decided to try it out.
The rest was history! Hematology thanks to Dr Silver eventually became merged with Oncology as Hematology-Oncology!
And now with the many recent major discoveries concerning the immune systems response to cancer, it’s perhaps heading toward being named Hematology-Oncology-Immunology.”
