Moustafa Abdou: Unmasking Pure Red Cell Aplasia

Moustafa Abdou, Author and Founder of AskHematologist.com, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Severe anemia with normal WBCs and platelets—what is the underlying trigger?

Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) is a classic diagnostic challenge in clinical hematology, characterized by selective erythroid failure and profound reticulocytopenia while granulopoiesis and thrombopoiesis remain fully intact.

Key clinical pointers to consider:

  • Acute Etiologies: Often driven by Parvovirus B19 infection, leading to transient aplastic crises.
  • Secondary Associations: Always screen for anterior mediastinal thymoma, systemic autoimmune conditions (SLE, RA), or lymphoproliferative disorders.
  • Targeted Management: Direct treatment at the root cause—ranging from high-dose IVIG or surgical resection of a thymoma to targeted immunosuppression with Cyclosporine A and corticosteroids for idiopathic cases.

Read the full clinical breakdown, diagnostic criteria, and management guide.”
