Shivanand Kumatagi Delivered Session on ISBT 128 at KMC Manipal
Shivanand Kumatagi, Development Officer (India) at ICCBBA, shared on LinkedIn:
”Insightful session on ISBT 128 at KMC Manipal
Had the privilege of delivering a lecture to the Postgraduate students of Transfusion Medicine KMC Manipal.
The session focused on Traceability in Transfusion Medicine—its challenges and the critical role of standardized labeling.
We discussed recent reports of suspected transfusion-transmitted HIV cases in Jharkhand, highlighting the urgent need for robust traceability mechanisms.
I emphasized how ISBT 128 standard labeling can significantly enhance Traceability and help mitigate transfusion-transmitted infections across India.
I also showcased ISBT 128 -compliant labels from Indian centers that have already adopted the standard—demonstrating real-world implementation and its impact on improving safety and accountability.
A special thanks to Eoin McGrath for joining us online and contributing to an extended and enriching discussion.
Grateful to the Transfusion Medicine KMC Manipal for hosting me.
It was a truly interactive experience, and I deeply appreciated the insights shared by the esteemed faculty of one of India’s leading institutes in Transfusion Medicine.
Looking forward to more such meaningful engagements that strengthen safe transfusion practices in India.”
