Does Hypersplenism Cause Thrombocytopenia? Insights from William Aird
William Aird, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, shared a post on X:
“DOES HYPERSPLENISM CAUSE THROMBOCYTOPENIA?
YES!
Platelet mass (circulating + splenic) regulates TPO. In hypersplenism, sequestered platelets still count toward mass → no ↑TPO drive, but fewer platelets in circulation due to redistribution.”
