Wolfgang Miesbach: Gut Feelings About Thrombosis – Microbiota as a Vascular Risk Factor

Wolfgang Miesbach, Professor of Medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Gut Feelings About Thrombosis: Microbiota as a Vascular Risk Factor.

Some of the most thought‑provoking science at GTH2026 came from the Mainz CTH group (Philipp Wild, Reinhardt Christoph, et al) with two complementary posters on gut microbiota and arterial thrombosis in hyperlipidemia and ageing:

In mildly hyperlipidemic Ldlr⁻/⁻ mice, conventional colonisation markedly enhanced platelet adhesion and arterial thrombus growth, while microbiota depletion almost neutralised the prothrombotic effect of hyperlipidemia—linking specific microbial communities and inflammatory mediators to platelet behaviour.

A second study showed that ageing plus a ‘dysbiotic’ microbiota drove larger thrombi, worse cholesterol/HDL profiles and a shift towards IL‑17/IL‑23‑skewed inflammation; modulating the microbiota partially reversed these changes.

Together, these data position the intestine as a modifiable cardiovascular organ, suggesting that future antithrombotic strategies might need to combine lipid‑lowering and platelet‑directed drugs with targeted microbiome interventions.”
