How Antiphospholipid Syndrome Can Affect the Adrenal Glands – APS Foundation of America

APS Foundation of America shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Sheng-Guang Li et al., published in Frontiers in Immunology, adding:

“Adrenal involvement in antiphospholipid syndrome and SLE-spectrum disease: a systematic review and pooled individual-patient analysis

This systematic review examined how Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) can affect the adrenal glands. Although uncommon, adrenal involvement can be a serious complication of APS. Blood clots and vascular injury may disrupt blood flow to the adrenal glands, resulting in adrenal hemorrhage, infarction, and adrenal insufficiency (Addison disease).

The review found that both adrenal glands were frequently affected in published cases, with adrenal hemorrhage as the most commonly reported imaging finding. Importantly, adrenal insufficiency was sometimes the first recognized manifestation of APS or a related autoimmune condition.

The authors emphasize that clinicians should consider APS in patients with unexplained adrenal hemorrhage, infarction, or adrenal insufficiency, particularly when other signs of abnormal clotting are present.

Bottom line: APS is a systemic disease that can affect many organs. While adrenal complications are rare, recognizing them quickly is important because adrenal insufficiency can become life-threatening without appropriate treatment.”
