Nabil Chakfe: Carotid Stent Design and Antiplatelet Therapy Influence Thrombosis Risk
Nabil Chakfe, Professor of Vascular Surgery at Strasbourg University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of the American Heart Association, adding:
”It was a real pleasure to have been associated in this very interesting research on carotid stent thrombosis risk, using a new macrofluidic model
mimicking the geometry of the human carotid artery-just published in the JAHA-Journal of the American Heart Association.
Interesting results on the role of stent design and associated antiplatelet therapy. The carotid bifurcation proves to be a real hot spot of thrombosis: struts
crossing it create a high-shear environment, and in our series of 147 stented stroke patients, 38.7 percent of those with stent thrombosis had a thrombus in that
plaque-free zone. Aspirin and abciximab reduced thrombus formation-and so did a prototype stent with an opening facing the bifurcation.
Congratulations to Axelle Kern, Pierre Mangin and the whole consortium.”
