Agnese Lucchetti: High Shear Drives Acute Carotid Stent Thrombosis in Tandem Lesions

Agnese Lucchetti, Postdoctoral Researcher at RWTH Aachen University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Journal of the American Heart Association, adding:

”Have a look at the new paper of Axelle Y. Kern and co-authors, ‘High-Shear Environment Promotes Acute Carotid Stent Thrombosis in Patients With Tandem Lesions,’ published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

In this study:

  1. An original macrofluidic model was used to characterize in depth the thrombogenicity of clinically used carotid stents.
  2. This experimental approach was combined with computational fluid dynamics analysis to pinpoint the rheological conditions that trigger thrombosis in a stent placed at the carotid bifurcation.
  3. These findings were confirmed by a retrospective clinical study in patients with tandem lesions, which showed massive thrombus formation occurring at the bifurcation.
  4. Finally, an alternative stent design — developed at the ITA Institute of Textile Technology at RWTH Aachen Universityis presented as a way to limit the formation of large thrombi in this region.”
