Alexander Misono: Improving DVT Diagnosis and Care Through Venous Duplex Ultrasound

Alexander Misono, Chief of Interventional Radiology, Program Director at Hoag Health System, shared a post on LinkedIn about his recent article, published in Vascular Disease Managementt (VDM) adding:

“If a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is misdiagnosed or missed, patients can be at a significantly increased risk for prothrombotic syndrome or PTS.

PTS can lead to impaired function, declining quality of life, and even more serious medical complications such as venous stasis leg ulcers.

Imaging is an absolutely critical step in the management of our patients with DVT and even those who have progressed to PTS. For DVT and PTS, there is a great opportunity to unearth clinical value in lower extremity venous duplex scanning and reporting.

Increasing emphasis on the proximal (aka, larger) veins; recommending further imaging studies when appropriate; and even recommending consultation to an interventional specialist can materially change the lives of patients and rework entire care pathways for DVT and PTS.
