Amna Idrees: Reducing Surgical Blood Loss in Children Through Perioperative TXA

Amna Idrees, Senior Registrar of Paediatric Surgery at Services Hospital Lahore, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in European Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, adding:

“Excited to share our latest research published in the European Journal of Clinical Pharmacy!

Our randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of perioperative tranexamic acid (TXA) on blood loss and hematoma formation in children undergoing hypospadias repair — a question with surprisingly little data in pediatric urology.

Key findings:

  • Mean blood loss reduced from 37.8 mL to 22.4 mL in the TXA group (p less than 0.001)
  • Hematoma formation dropped from 20 percent to just 3.3 percent (p = 0.045)
  • No thromboembolic or serious adverse events recorded

TXA is safe, affordable, and now has evidence supporting its routine use in pediatric hypospadias surgery.

We hope this adds to the growing literature on pharmacologic hemostasis in pediatric reconstructive urology.”
