Aram Hovhannisyan: New Evidence on CAT from the THEO Study

Aram Hovhannisyan, Medical Student, Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biomedical Research, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Thrombosis Research, adding:

“Cancer-associated thrombosis: a challenge that persists nearly two centuries after its recognition.

The association between cancer and thrombosis has been recognized for nearly two centuries. Yet, cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a major public health challenge, with limited prospective evidence from comprehensive cancer center settings.

The primary objective of the THEO study, recently published in Thrombosis Research, was to prospectively quantify the incidence of VTE among hospitalized patients with cancer.

Our findings suggest that, despite protocol-based thromboprophylaxis, the incidence rate of VTE remained substantially elevated compared with both the general population and rates reported in other populations of patients with cancer.

Furthermore, consistent with previous studies, the occurrence of VTE was independently associated with an approximately twofold higher hazard of all-cause mortality (aHR 2.07; 95% CI 1.36–3.15).

Although the relationship between cancer and thrombosis is well established, VTE continues to represent a major challenge in oncology. Our findings highlight the importance of optimized prevention and management strategies, individualized risk assessment, and close clinical monitoring, particularly among hospitalized patients with cancer.

Special thanks to Prof. Emmanuel Chamorey, Dr. Victoria Ferrari and all members of the THEO Study Groupe.”
