Archil Jaliashvili: Oxygen Transport in Capillaries

Archil Jaliashvili, Co-Chief Executive Officer at GeoBio Pharm, Biotech Executive, Strategic Partner of BHOC and Precision Oxygen Therapeutics, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-auhored, published in Artificial Cells, Blood Substitutes, and Biotechnology, adding:

“Oxygen transport in capillaries

RBCs deform as they pass through capillaries, while small hemoglobin carriers can flow with plasma and release Oโ‚‚ for diffusion toward tissue.

In a selected model case, Vadapalli, Goldman and Popel (2002) calculated mean tissue pOโ‚‚ of 16 mmHg without HBOC and 23 mmHg with 7 g/dL plasma HBOC at 20% capillary hematocrit.

The authors also reported up to 60% lower intracapillary oxygen transport resistance, a separate measure.

HBOC was added to RBCs, increasing total hemoglobin; these theoretical results inform BHOC research and require product-specific validation.

Which measurements best show whether oxygen carried in blood actually reaches tissue?”

Title: Calculations of oxygen transport by red blood cells and hemoglobin solutions in capillaries

Authors: Arjun Vadapalli, Daniel Goldman, Aleksander S Popel
