Ashok Choudhury: Portal Vein Thrombosis and Outcomes in Cirrhosis
Ashok Choudhury, Gastroenterologist, Liver Transplant Physician, Professor at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Liver Transplantation, adding:
“New publication | Portal Vein Thrombosis in Cirrhosis
Pleased to share this important global study examining the impact of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) among hospitalized patients with cirrhosis.
The multinational CLEARED cohort included 7,721 patients from 117 centers across 37 countries.
Some important findings:
- PVT was present in 10% of hospitalized patients with cirrhosis.
- 30-day mortality was 22.1% in patients with PVT compared with 18.0% without PVT.
- PVT was also associated with higher rates of acute kidney injury, severe hepatic encephalopathy, 30-day readmission and liver transplantation.
- After adjustment, PVT remained independently associated with increased short-term mortality. JOVE Visualize
These findings highlight the importance of identifying PVT early and recognizing these patients as a higher-risk group who may require closer inpatient management and post-discharge follow-up.”
