Başak Taburoğlu Yılmaz: Improving Diagnosis and Care for Women With Bleeding Disorders

Başak Taburoğlu Yılmaz, Medical Manager, Hematology-Oncology Sp. (Hemat-Onk. Uzm Hekimi), Medical doctor (MD), Pediatrician at Proceutica Pharmaceuticals Marketing and Consulting Inc., shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Donna Coffin et al, published in Haemophilia Journal:

”55% of people diagnosed with VWD and 52% of people diagnosed with other bleeding disorders were women and girls.

Also based on a ratio of female somatic carriers to males with haemophilia, an estimated 30% of individuals with haemophilia are expected to be women and girls.

Delayed diagnosis coupled with underreporting of women and girls with haemophilia continues to pose significant challenges.

Challenges are pregnancy management, diagnostic challenges, management of acute bleeds, pregnancy risks, long-term complications, and impact on families—and a lack of volunteers or staff.

To overcome these obstacles, increasing women’s representation on committees and boards and increasing education initiatives would be beneficial.”
