Cameron Borg: Could Taking Vitamin D Negatively Impact Circadian Network?
Cameron Borg, Holistic Nutritionist, Podcast Host at Ricci Flow Nutrition, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by him, published in Ricci Flow, adding:
“Vitamin D should really be discussed as a diverse family of molecules.
From the pre-vitamin D produced in our skin, mitochondrial enzymes synthesise dozens of active metabolites that play important roles in cell cycle regulation.
A recent paper outlined a potential bidirectional relationship between these vitamin D derivatives and circadian rhythm.
Their work builds on previous data showing that these metabolites are not only produced by circadian-sensitive enzymes, but themselves then interact with and potentially modulate circadian genes.
This should make us question whether taking vitamin D as a supplement could negatively impact this exquisitely sensitive circadian network.
A focus on vitamin D without paying attention to the fact that it exists in a sea of related hydroxyderivatives is likely to be myopic, and potentially partially explains why vitamin D supplement trials have been so disappointing.”
