David McIntosh: The Evolving Safety Framework for Plasma-Derived Therapies
David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association’s post on LinkedIn:
“This interesting piece of work will be of significant interest to anyone working in, or interested in, this field of life-saving medicines.
A footnote to add is that what is being described is the 80 percent of current World supplies of plasma that are achieved via Voluntary Reasonably Compensated Donation (VRCD).
Plasma obtained via so-called ‘Unpaid Donation’ almost certainly generates similar results, but as there is so much less of it in the World, relevant data is more scarce.
What is certainly clear, from the vast body of evidence gathered throughout the years of this Century, is that VRCD plasma collection is as safe as, if not safer than, unpaid donor plasma.
As safe – and much more of it – is surely a winning formula!”
Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA) shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Halide Tuna et al, published in Annals of Blood, adding:
“A new peer-reviewed publication authored by PPTA’s Halide Tuna and Dr. Toby Simon explores how plasma-derived medicinal products have achieved today’s strong safety profile.
The publication in Annals of Blood highlights the evolution of the ‘safety tripod’ — donor screening, testing, and pathogen reduction — and its role in ensuring the continued safety of plasma-derived therapies.
The conclusion is clear: strong, science-driven systems continue to protect patients today, while ongoing surveillance, periodic evaluation of methods, and technological innovations are essential for future preparedness.”
