Dima Shulkin: Assessing AI-Driven Blood Test Screening for Colorectal Cancer

Dima Shulkin, Co-Founder and CTO at RobotDreams GmbH, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Raeni Dwi Putri et al, published in Iranian Journal of Medical Sciences, adding:

“A blood-test cancer screen sounds like a breakthrough, until you see how many cancers it misses.

ColonFlag is a machine-learning tool that reads the ordinary blood test (the complete blood count) almost everyone has on file, looking for the faint anemia a hidden colon tumor can cause.

A 2024 review by Raeni Dwi Putri and colleagues in the Iranian Journal of Medical Sciences pulled together 10 studies, some covering millions of people.

The honest headline number: across most of the studies it caught only about 4 percent to 35 percent of cancers (two smaller prospective studies did better), far below a stool test or colonoscopy.

The authors say this plainly, and that candor is the point.”
