Filippo Consonni: Treatment Strategies for Hematologic Immune Dysregulation in Inborn Errors of Immunity

Glad to share our new multicenter Italian study on the treatment of hematologic immune dysregulation in patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI), now published in Frontiers in Immunology.
Hematologic manifestations – including autoimmune cytopenias, lymphoproliferation, and HLH – are among the most frequent and potentially life-threatening complications of IEI. However, the optimal therapeutic strategies remain far from well established.
In this multicenter retrospective cohort of 116 patients from Italian tertiary referral centers, we evaluated real-world treatment indications, efficacy, and safety across conventional, targeted, and transplant-based approaches.
Our findings highlight the remarkable efficacy of targeted therapies, which achieved significantly higher response rates than non-targeted treatments, while also underscoring the persistent heterogeneity in treatment decisions and the need for broader access to molecular diagnosis to enable precision medicine.
