Guillaume Baudry: Landmark Clinical Trials Shaping Modern Heart Failure Therapy
Guillaume Baudry, Associate Editor at ESC Heart Failure Journal, Associate Professor – Hospital Practitioner at University of Lorraine, Physician in Charge of the CIC-P at Nancy University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in ESC Heart Failure, adding:
“Delighted to share our new review published in ESC Heart Failure:
‘Landmark clinical trials shaping contemporary guideline-directed medical therapy for heart failure.’
Heart failure treatment has undergone a remarkable transformation—from predominantly symptom-oriented care to a therapeutic strategy built around treatments that reduce morbidity and mortality.
In this review, we revisit the landmark randomized clinical trials that shaped contemporary guideline-directed medical therapy, across the spectrum of left ventricular ejection fraction.
From RAAS inhibition and beta-blockers to MRAs, ARNIs and SGLT2 inhibitors, the paper highlights how successive trials progressively changed both our evidence base and clinical practice. We also discuss selected adjunctive and emerging approaches, including vericiguat, intravenous iron and incretin-based therapies.
Beyond looking back at how the field evolved, the review also highlights what remains ahead: better implementation of proven therapies, improved representation in clinical trials, and further progress toward precision medicine in heart failure.
Many thanks to all the co-authors for this great collaborative work, and especially to Jan Biegus, Michał Tkaczyszyn and Piotr Ponikowski, for the invitation to contribute.”
