Hessam Kakavand: Rethinking Thrombotic Risk in Modern Cancer Therapy
Hessam Kakavand, Clinical Pharmacist at Rasool Akram Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Circulation, adding:
“Honored to share that our comprehensive review, ‘Anticancer Drugs and Cancer-Associated Thrombosis,’ has been published in Circulation!
As cancer therapies continue to transform patient outcomes, they also bring new cardiovascular and vascular challenges.
Cancer-associated thrombosis remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality, yet the thrombotic risks associated with many contemporary anticancer therapies are often underrecognized.
In this review, we examine the evidence linking anticancer therapies to venous and arterial thrombotic events, explore the underlying pathobiological mechanisms, summarize current guideline recommendations, and discuss emerging cardio-oncology perspectives on risk assessment and management.
This work is also a reminder that advancing patient care is never the result of a single discipline. It is made possible through the collective expertise of cardiologists, hematologists, oncologists, and of course clinical pharmacists, working together to address increasingly complex clinical challenges.
I truly believe that multidisciplinary collaboration is the foundation of the future of cardio-oncology.
I am deeply grateful to my outstanding co-authors and colleagues, Maryam Kouchakzadeh, Parham Sadeghipour, Armin Pasukanovic, Jean Connors, Adam Cuker, Craig Beavers, Benjamin Van Tassell, Antonio Abbate, Nicola Potere, Behnood Bikdeli, and Jayant Raikhelkar whose expertise, thoughtful discussions, and collaborative spirit made this work possible.
A very special thanks to my mentor Azita H. Talasaz for her exceptional leadership and vision throughout this project. Your guidance has been invaluable, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to learn from and work alongside you.”
