Ingmar Schön: Our paper on Thrombin-Driven Regulation of Platelet Contractility Is Now Live
Ingmar Schön, Senior Lecturer at Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Advances, adding:
”Right about now, the funk soul brother check it out now – our newest paper in Blood Advances has been published in its final style!
It’s been a long and winding road that Dishon Wayne Hiebner, PhD had started down five years ago, joined by Smita Patil, PhD and Martin Kenny, PhD in my lab.
They discovered that the clotting enzyme thrombin boosts platelet contraction in a unique manner, through short-term PAR>G13>RhoA>Rock>pMLC signalling that may be sustained long-term by up-regulation on the RNA/protein levels.
Our data also suggest that thrombin might be a critical driver of clot contraction when platelets have been treated with anti-platelet drugs.
Overall, our study showed that thrombin fuels the heavy lifting performed by platelets during clot formation.
It’s an honour that our article has been highlighted in a commentary by Molly Mollica, Ph.D. who highlighted the wider research context.
You never walk alone – we say a huge ‘thank you’ to Markus Bender and Viola Vogel and their teams for their important contributions and a fruitful collaboration.
It’s also great to see how our undergraduate research students Fionnuala Mullin and Sarah Benn have played their parts in collecting the data.
Last but not least, I am grateful for funding from Research Ireland (SFI) and their support in managing the project through (post-)Covid times, and my RCSI School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences for their support too.”
