Katariina Öörni: Familial Hypercholesterolaemia in Children Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Katariina Öörni, Professor of Integrative Physiology at University of Helsinki, shared a post on LinkedIn about recent articles, adding:

“Today is FH Awareness Day.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) exposes children to high LDL cholesterol from an early age.

The new EAS consensus statement on FH in children and adolescents makes a strong case for finding and treating FH early.

But cholesterol concentration may not tell the whole story.

In our study with colleagues in Norway, LDL from children with FH was more prone to aggregation than LDL from children without FH.

We also found differences in HDL function. This suggests that, alongside the higher cholesterol levels, the functional properties of lipoproteins may be less favourable in children with FH.

FH can be identified in childhood.

Earlier diagnosis gives children and their families the opportunity to benefit from treatment before decades of exposure to high LDL cholesterol have passed.”
