Katerina Pavenski: Rethinking What ‘Normal’ Means for Iron Deficiency

Katerina Pavenski, Physician at St. Michael’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jacquelyn M Powers et al., published in Blood Advances, adding:

“Check out the newly published evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for diagnosing iron deficiency from the American Society of Hematology.

The updated ferritin thresholds for diagnosis of iron deficiency:

  • Ferritin 30 ng/mL or lower for adults, menstruating or pregnant individuals; 50 ng/mL or lower for certain high-risk groups
  • Ferritin below 100 ng/mL OR TSAT under 20% for adults with anemia of inflammation.”
