Michael Honigberg: Clonal Hematopoiesis as a Driver of Aortic Valve Calcification

Michael Honigberg, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Associate Editor at Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Cardiovascular Medicine, adding:

“Excited to share our new preprint – a highly collaborative effort integrating population genomics, cardiac imaging, and experimental biology, led by Aeron Small with the Trevor Fidler and Elena Aikawa labs.

We found that ASXL1-mutant clonal hematopoiesis (CHIP) was associated with incident aortic stenosis and worse aortic valve hemodynamics.

In complementary experiments, ASXL1-mutant macrophage-like cells produced a pro-inflammatory secretome and accelerated calcification in human valve cells, a response blunted by IL-1 or IL-6 inhibition.

Grateful to co-authors and collaborators including Liying Xue, Shinsuke Ito, Cesar De Jeronimo, Sasha A. Singh, Mesbah Uddin, Art Schuermans, Spencer Flynn, George Thanassoulis, Peter Libby, Amil Shah, Christie Ballantyne, Pradeep Natarajan.”
